Probably the stupidest thing to happen in New Zealand Internet history happened the other day.
Some 'Collector' brought a $30 handbag for $23K on Trade Me (an eBay clone).
The handbag had been used in an embarrassing assault which gained some media attention.
As a show of how great the media is here, the auction was plastered all over the news for multiple days, usually as the lead story.
On the night that the auction was due to close the news presenter was kind enough to give us frequent updates on what the bidding was up to. Must of been a slow news day ...
The auction got over 2 million hits, which I believe is the biggest in the sites history. Even though Fair Fax was recently able to purchase Trade Me for $700 million they could not afford decent servers which didn't time out.

Speaking of massive traffic I have posted the stats for this weeks web traffic.

You can see that the week starts of slow with around 80 unique visitors. It peaks mid week with 1000 unique visitors then enters a steady decline. It seems to be leveling out at around 300 looking at yesterdays and today's traffic.
The peak was due to Simple Review 1.3 being released.
