Microsoft's Xbox 360 showcase X08 was held this weekend at Marina Square, Singapore.
Since Gold members received a free "Goodies Pack" upon registration I thought that I might as well go for a look; expecting to only receive a lanyard, posters, t-shirt or drink bottle I was less than enthusiastic about this freebie but thought maybe there will be some other good deals or games of interest.

Upon arrival I headed to the counter to receive my reward and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did I get a lanyard and some posters but also received two free games as well as some magazines and other promotional items. I received Project Sylpheed and Shadowrun other games given out were Crackdown, Viva Piņata, Armored Core 4, Kameo, Forza 2 and Dead or Alive 4, while the games are a bit old you can hardly complain.

They had quite a few games on display, some of which had already been released ages ago e.g. Virtual Fighter 5 and some to be released shortly e.g. Gears of War 2, Left for Dead and Mirror's Edge. Luckily the venue wasn't that packed so the queues were very short (a stark contrast to most things in Singapore).
Since I was only really interested in playing Call of Duty - World at War, Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV (which were advertised/rumored to be there but I didn't see a playable version) I only tried a handful of other games which I don't have anything nice to say about:

  • Quantum Of Solace - looked quite nice but seemed like another generic FPS with an annoying cover system.
  • Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - the character models look quite drab/boring (apart from the joker) and seems to play just like Mortal Kombat 4 ... maybe people liked that?
  • Far Cry 2 - Crashed.

Some guy (from UbiSoft I think) demoed Tom Clancy's EndWar, it looked quite cool and the voice commands worked well even in the noisy room, the only problem was that the demo went on for way too longer and after 30 minutes most people had left, including myself.

Overall the even was OK, could can done with some more excitement and antics.
