F.E.A.R It's Scary For some reason I came across this thread, it says that you can get a performance increase in F.E.A.R of around 10% by simply renaming the F.E.A.R executable, this only applies to R4XX based ATI cards. This sounded like the most ridiculous thing in the world, but if I can get another 10 frame per second out of this resource hog of a game I will be very happy.
I tested this on my MSI x800 XL with F.E.A.R 1.02 running the performance test.
Here are my results:
| fear.exe |
anything.exe |
| 1st run |
2nd run |
1st run |
2nd run |
- min 25
- avg 46
- max 93
- 0% below 25
- 44% between 25 and 40
- 56% above 40

Not believing it I renamed the executable back to fear.exe and the results were the same as the other fear.exe tests.
I don't know what's going on, but the max frame rate jumped up by 20 fps as well as the percent above 40fps. The min and avg values went down a little.
Since F.E.A.R has nVidias logo 'The way it's meant to be played' on it maybe this is the work of something more sinister.
But then LogiCow says this:
Found that on another forum.
"Don't remember where I read it, but one of the guys on the Catalyst driver team basically said, "Oh, whoops. Looks like we screwed up an 'If' Statement." So you conspiracy theorists can resume the Cheez-Its binge."
hmmmmm whether it's a coincidence or not I'm going start playing using anything.exe
